The Internet - A Love Story in 3 Parts

The Internet - A Love Story in 3 Parts

Who invented the Internet?

I was in high school back in the 70's and I remember calling my best friend on our rotary dial phone. Little did I know that 2 people where developing, what 2 decades later would become... the Internet.

They are Vint Cerf {pronounced like, surf} (born; New Haven, CT in 1943 - age 74) and Bob Kahn (born; Brooklyn, NY in 1938 - age 78). So, who says older folks can't do computers... bah, humbug.

Vint Cerf

Bob Kahn

If you like trivia quizzes, we have a nifty one at the end of the article. Be sure to look for it! It's called; Am I an Internet Smarty Pants?

Coming of Age

What do you do on the Internet?

  • The internet benefits everyone! Even if you don't use it directly, it helps the people who help you.
  • Businesses of all kinds benefit by connecting to customers and suppliers.
  • People connect with families and friends.
  • People benefit from: Online education | self-improvement | information | entertainment | shopping | news - the list goes on!
  • There are NO Gate-keepers! There are NO toll-booths! Everyone has the same access as anyone else or any business - it's a level playing field.

The Breakup

It is This Simple!

A few of the biggest phone companies (AT&T and Verizon) and cable TV company (Comcast) want MORE MONEY! And they want to get it by having the government change the law so they can run the internet their way instead of the fair way.

How will they get more money? Time will tell [if we let them go through with this], but it's expected they'll give bad service to some websites (slow them down or limit access)unless YOU pay more or the WEBSITE OWNERS pay more to get back to "normal" service.

This would be like having a toll-booth or a censor on the internet. Do you think this might suppress business in America? Can it slow innovation? Would hopeful business-people here in Vermont and everywhere in the US, have a more difficult or an impossible time getting a business up and running? If you're that business person or your son or daughter is that business person; how does this plan by Donald Trump to give away your internet, make you feel?

Before the internet there was the telephone and "The" Phone Company (nicknamed, Ma Bell). The company became too large and had no competition (high prices, poor service) so the federal government split it into 8 smaller pieces in 1984. Like a zombie that just keeps coming back; so did the phone company. Except you know them today as Verizon and AT&T. In fact, you may have cell phone bills that you pay every month to one of these companies. And there are other related companies in the mix you may have heard about; Comcast (the cable company) and DirecTV (satellite TV).

It's an old story, a story of lust for money. When having it all is not enough - is it time for these Mega Media Moguls to: lie, cheat, and steal? You be the judge.

Why would YOU want Trump's Internet deal? Why would anyone want this? They don't! Millions of Americans have said this in their comments to the Federal Communications Commission. The comments that have been mostly ignored.

Home Town Heros | EC Fiber

Here in East Central Vermont, many towns are now (or will soon be) served by our municipally owned, locally developed, high-speed, fiber optic internet service provider - EC Fiber. Carole Monroe, who is the CEO of ValleyNet (EC Fiber's operating company) offered this very important statement to CNUZ.tv

who wants to kill the internet - it's the Zombies

"As a municipal district composed almost entirely of rural communities, ECFiber believes that a free and open internet is essential for economic sustainability and educational opportunity. It empowers individuals to create and grow unique small businesses that are the essence of rural America, while fully participating in the worldwide marketplace of ideas, goods, and services."

THIS, says it All

who wants to kill the internet - it's the Zombies

Here's a 2016 quote from the Verge (online news website) about a pending merger between AT&T and Time Warner. Time Warner is the 3rd largest media conglomerate. They own brands including: HBO, Turner Broadcasting, CNN News, and Warner Bros.  - just to name a few.

"Wouldn’t we be better off if the content companies were competing to have their work widely distributed and earning revenue by capturing audience attention on their own merits, and the network companies were competing to deliver faster, more reliable service at lower prices? Instead it seems like AT&T and Verizon have decided that true competition in delivering service is too hard, and the better way to capture customers is by locking up content.

If you thought music streaming exclusives were bad, just wait until Comcast starts windowing SNL [Saturday Night Live] sketches to keep people on its pipes while AT&T only streams CNN to AT&T phones, while Verizon keeps wielding mobile access to NFL games like a club against the American consumer."

Epilogue

Do You Know What's Happening on December 7 and 14?

Nationwide Protest at Verizon Stores | Dec 7

who wants to kill the internet - it's the Zombies

That's right, a nationwide protest at Verizon stores. That's Verizon, the former employer of Trump's guy, the new FCC chairman. In nearby Hanover, NH is a Verizon store. It's one of the 600 stores throughout the country where protests will be held. It's at 11:00, Thursday December 7.

If any of this matters to you, please be there. If you can't, please forward this right away to someone you know who may be able to get there.

Why? Because only 1 week later, Trump's guy (Mr. Pai) at the FCC is expected to vote to hand over the keys to the internet to Verizon, AT&T, and Comcast

The politicians might be ignoring us, but let the likes of Verizon see their paying customers protesting and they might think twice about having millions of P.O.'d people ready to vote with their dollars

To quote that famous line from the 1976 movie, Network. Anchorman Howard Beale rallies the citizens with that famous speech that includes the line...

"...I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"
